DISPOSAL INFORMATION
DISPOSAL OF CFLs
CFLs contain mercury and they must be properly disposed of when they have reached the end of their life. We have created an online disposal locator to make it easy for you to properly dispose of your old CFLs. Vermont law requires that all mercury labeled products must be disposed of as hazardous waste rather than include it in your regular trash.
CFLs contain a small amount of mercury -- less than 5 milligrams. The amount of mercury in a CFL is 1/5 the amount in a watch battery. Mercury is commonly found in thermometers, light switches, thermostats, and batteries. Older household thermometers contain about 500 mg of mercury. It would take over 100 CFLs to equal that amount. You can also visit www.mercvt.org website for more information about mercury and mercury disposal.
